I'm very excited to announce my very first solo show, at Gallery 1988: LA on January 9th. Almost a year's worth of work, and my most challenging project to date. I can't wait to share it with you, and if you're in the area, please stop by. I'll post some previews before the show. See you there!

ORIGINAL CONCEPT SKETCH:
PROCESS:
Digital sculpting of the terrain in a 3D sculpting software called Z-Brush. I sculpted the terrain in 3D, exported to Photoshop where I cleaned up the flat image, then created a bitmap file using halftone lines to make the art screen-printable.
First I create the general shape in illustrator. I export a jpg in RGB with the shape filled in with black, then import the jpg as an alpha on the standard brush in Z-Brush. I use the flat plane tool and extrude the shape of the dinosaur head island, then mask off that area.
Using a combination of brushes (though I prefer the 'fracture' brush with a linear texture) I start blocking in the terrain.
When finished, I export a .psd, clone stamp and tweak any uneven areas, mask out the rest of the 3D render using the shape I had already created in Illustrator, and add in flat planes.
I'll then convert it to grayscale, increase the levels and contrast to bring out the blackest shades, then change the color mode to bitmap. I use the halftone screen, at 300 dpi, with "lines" chosen as the shape. Frequency is at 30 and angle at 45. This leaves the halftone lines thick enough to be screen printable.
